About the Program

What is Sunday BBQ?

Sunday BBQ is part of AYC's Connection & Recreation program. Held every Sunday afternoon, it is a free, drop-in community gathering that brings African youth and families together at the close of the weekend — a warm, welcoming space to share food, stories, and good company.

Sundays can be a quiet and sometimes lonely time, especially for young people and newly arrived families. AYC's Sunday BBQ turns that around — filling the afternoon with laughter, culture, and the kind of community connection that carries people through the week ahead.

No registration, no cost, no barriers. Just show up — there is always enough food and always a warm welcome.

Our Purpose

Why Sunday Matters

Sunday BBQ is a deliberate act of community care — creating a consistent, welcoming space at the end of the weekend when connection matters most.

Weekend Connection

Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to slow down, share a meal, and reconnect with community before the week begins.

Cultural Belonging

Sharing food from African traditions affirms identity and cultural pride in a space that celebrates who you are and where you come from.

Family Friendly

Sunday BBQ welcomes everyone — young people, parents, elders, and children. It is a space for the whole community to gather together.

Wellbeing in Action

Regular social connection builds the resilience and protective factors that support long-term mental health and wellbeing.

Grounded in the B-MAD Framework

Sunday BBQ sits within AYC's B-MAD prevention framework — Beyond Mental Health, Alcohol & Drugs. By showing up consistently for young people and families every weekend, we build the belonging and connection that are the foundation of good mental health.
