African youth playing basketball at an AYC community program

Run. Jump. Belong.

Saturday Basketball

Every Saturday, AYC brings young people together on the court for a free community basketball program — building fitness, teamwork, and friendships in a culturally safe and welcoming environment.

About the Program

Thunders 21 C

AYC Basketball Club

Thunders 21 C is AYC's community basketball club — a free, weekly program open to African young people of all skill levels. From beginners to experienced players, there are no tryouts and no pressure. Just the game, the team, and the community.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports among African youth communities. At AYC, Thunders 21 C uses the game as a powerful tool for connection — bringing young people together around something they love, while building the social bonds and positive routines that support their overall wellbeing.

Whether you want to play competitively, stay active, or simply be part of a team — Thunders 21 C has a place for you.

Why Basketball Matters

Sport is one of the most effective tools for youth wellbeing. At AYC, Saturday Basketball is more than a game — it's a structured, positive environment where young people develop skills, confidence, and community.

Physical Wellbeing

Regular physical activity improves mental health, reduces stress, and builds the energy and resilience young people need to thrive.

Teamwork & Discipline

Basketball teaches young people how to work together, communicate under pressure, and commit — skills that carry far beyond the court.

Positive Peer Networks

Playing alongside peers builds genuine friendships and a sense of belonging within a positive, structured social environment.

Cultural Identity

Sport is deeply woven into African community life. Playing together affirms shared identity and pride in a space that celebrates who you are.

Part of the B-MAD Framework

Saturday Basketball is a core activity within AYC's B-MAD prevention framework — Beyond Mental Health, Alcohol & Drugs. By providing regular, structured sport, we build the protective factors — belonging, positive identity, routine, and peer connection — that support long-term mental health and keep young people away from harmful influences.
