African Youth Collective
Community BBQ
Free food, good company, and a place to belong.
AYC's Community BBQ events bring together young people and families from across Melbourne's African communities for a shared meal, connection, and a good time — no cost, no barriers, just community.
About the Program
More Than a Meal
Food has always been at the heart of African community life. AYC's Community BBQ program creates regular opportunities for young people, families, and community members to come together around the grill — sharing food, stories, and support in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
These events are free and open to everyone. Whether you are new to the area, feeling isolated, or simply looking for connection, the Community BBQ is a place where you are always welcome. No registration, no cost — just show up.
Beyond the food, our BBQs are a space where AYC staff and volunteers connect with community members, check in on wellbeing, and link people to programs and services that can help. It is informal outreach at its best.

Our Purpose
Why We Gather
Our BBQs are about more than food. They are a deliberate act of community building — grounded in AYC's belief that belonging is a foundation for wellbeing.
Connection
Regular gatherings build trust and familiarity — the kind of relationships that help people feel less alone and more supported.
Outreach
BBQs are a natural setting for AYC staff to connect with young people and families who may not engage with formal services.
Cultural Pride
Sharing food is a deeply cultural act. Our BBQs honour African traditions of hospitality and communal eating.
Wellbeing
Social connection is one of the strongest protective factors for mental health. Every BBQ is an investment in community wellbeing.
When to Come
Weekly BBQ Schedule
AYC runs Community BBQs four times a week, giving community members multiple opportunities to connect.
Grounded in the B-MAD Framework
Community BBQs are a core part of AYC's B-MAD prevention approach. By creating regular, low-barrier spaces for connection, we build the social bonds that protect young people from isolation, substance use, and poor mental health. Every BBQ is prevention work in action.
